Valley Fest, Friday 3-Sunday 5 August: the ultimate family friendly food festival frenzy
Festival season is in full swing, Piggies! And if you’re in search of a uniquely lovely, fully family friendly food/live music fiesta, this is the one’s for you.
We’re stocking up on sunscreen and polishing our wellies (best to make sure all possible weather outcomes are covered) for Valley Fest, the UK’s only organic food festival, taking place on a working organic farm in the utterly gorgeous surroundings of Chew Valley Lake, Somerset across the weekend of Friday 3-Sunday 5 August.
Amongst the lively line-up of events and activities on the festival schedule, Friday night kicks off proceedings in fine style with an incredible 3-course banquet prepared by chef Paul Collins and his team from the acclaimed Yeo Valley Canteen. To supplement the sumptuous food, involve yourself in an immersive theatrical experience based on this year’s festival theme (the Legend of the Lake, no less) – feel free to wear fancy dress evoking the mysterious magical creatures that might appear from the lake the festival overlooks.
Saturday’s Midnight Feast and the Sunday Picnic are equally enticing. The Midnight Feast (again complete with live entertainment) is served on the top of the hill by the fire pit, while the Sunday Picnic is a sublimely relaxing experience. Fill up your picnic boxes before kicking back and chilling out on one of the many blankets laid out on the brow of the hill, offering the perfect picnic spot overlooking the stunning Chew Valley lake – and enjoy perfect picnic food such as barbecued chicken wings courtesy of festival owner and organic meat farmer Luke Hasell, salad by Michelin-starred chef Josh Eggleton, pulled pork baps created by Paul Collins and Farmdrop’s vegetable asado – after all that, there’s even a flourish of Yeo Valley ice cream to indulge in at the finishing line.
Alongside all this, the Chew Down tent is host to a wide variety of hands-on workshops and demos over the weekend, hosted by theatre group 6 Foot Stories – bear in mind that Valley Fest encourages everyone to play with their food! Farmdrop will be hosting pasta making and cup cake decorating workshops, Coombe Farm are presenting a butchery demonstration and a burger making session for kids, TV chefs Pat Hart and Sherrie Eugene-Hart will be on site to share a taste of their Carib-Asian Cookery, and Bristol’s favourite foodie Elly Pear will be offering a glimpse of her famous culinary talents. Meanwhile, those lovely Community Farm folk will will host a selection of fun and informative workshops and talks, giving insight into the farm and organic farming, including sessions on foraging, veg picking and fermenting among others. All the food at Valley Fest is fully organic, and a wide range of organic food stalls catering to all tastes at all hours, while live music from all manner of eclectic entertainers goes large.
