The Huntsman
Your hunt for stylish contemporary sustenance ends here

The general ambience at this recently-refurbished city centre pub (part of the Fuller’s family-owned chain – see also the Crystal Palace and The Boater) offers broad appeal to contemporary tastes. But hey, this is Bath – so naturally, there’s a big history behind that scrubbed-up facade. The pub was built in the mid-1700s by John Wood the Elder (father of the son responsible for designing and building Bath’s most iconic facades, including the Assembly Rooms, the Royal Crescent and Queen Square ) while the frontage itself is said to be the oldest shop-front in the city. Huntsman head honchos are particularly proud of their upper-level dining room the Elder Room: a grand but cosy, Regency-styled affair bedecked with velvet drapes, plush furnishings and all manner of elegant but quirky fixtures and fittings – Georgian glamorama a go-go indeed. But what The Pig really loves about The Huntsman is the menu, wherein exceedingly upper-crust, modern British seasonal scrumptiousness creates a perfect partnership with the rather lovely setting in which such feasts are served. So where to tuck in? The choice is yours. The Huntsman’s vibrant street-level bar makes for a lovely, lively lunch spot or mates-date suppertime refuel, where classic gastropub fare including smashing sarnies, seasonal ‘small plates’ and sausage rolls that many Piggies have deemed to be the best in Bath make for the perfect with-drinks sociable nibbles. Venture upstairs to the Elder Room, however, and a full range of chef-driven delights await you, at downhome prices that belie such a well-heeled array – the Wood family would most definitely approve if your hunt for stylish contemporary sustenance ends here.
