The Grapes Bath
prepare to have all your pub perceptions challenged in the nicest possible way
A thriving, lively bar; a Jacobean dining room/event space; regular live music; a Wellness zone; Bath’s only Izakaya (the Budō Bā);a collection of tasteful letting rooms (Pococks Lodgings) – can a city centre pub really be home to all this and much, much more? If you think not, get thee to The Grapes and prepare to have all your pub perceptions challenged in the nicest possible way.
This historic pub’s modern-day owners Ellie and John Leiper have worked modern-day magic on a Grade ii listed building on one of the most ancient sites in Bath (there’s been a pub on this corner since at least 1792), proving that time-honoured tradition and contemporary kick-back expectations can indeed come together in perfect hostelry harmony, pushing a strong community vibe to the fore and keeping it local at every step of the way.
Find craft and real ales, wheat beers, stouts and lagers from local breweries and producers at the TV-free street level bar, alongside a heady mix of fine but affordable wines and top-notch spirits, take a pew (or an upcycled, reclaimed bus seat, perhaps?) and just… well, just drink it all in, at your own pace; the living is easy here.
Feeling hungry? The Budō Bā (in that elegant Jacobean dining room, on the first floor) is open for Izakaya business every Friday and Saturday evening, and offers a tasteful but buzzing, super-social meet, eat and be merry experience that’s totally unique to Bath.
The very same room upper-level room is used for distinctly different purposes on weekday daytimes, including a Life Drawing Class on Wednesdays and regular yoga and pilates sessions throughout the week; back downstairs again, regular live music events including The Spoonful Session (Blues) every Tuesday evening, The Crazy Rhythm Club (gypsy jazz/swing) every Wednesday evening and a proper, traditional Irish Folk Session every Thursday evening keep toes tapping.
It’s safe to say that this ancient, brand new pub is today in very safe hands indeed.
