Neither posh, flash nor clever - but a much-loved old favourite

Neither posh, flash nor clever — Marmaris is a much-loved old favourite on the Bath late-night scene. Not that you have to be a night owl to appreciate this cosy, traditional Turkish taverna. Enter through the main restaurant door on the right (take the one on the left, and you have to pass the takeaway kebab meat seething on spits in a most unappetising manner) and let camp be your watchword as you take a table alongside the huge mural of the restaurant’s namesake resort. Demis Roussos croons in the background, exotic boys in loose bow ties seat you at your table and someone who looks a bit like Charles Aznavour oversees the whole operation. An appearance by the dessert trolley on rickety castors and proper, thick Turkish coffee complete your main event feast, based largely around variations on classic mezze, moussakas, kebabs and slow-roasted meat dishes. The whole experience is fun rather than foodie, but if Marmaris ever closes its doors for good, a bit of Bath’s heart will go with it.
