Exciting news from the Bath Pub Company (Marlborough Tavern, Chequers and Hare & Hounds)
First stop: the Marlborough Tavern (see pic of their glorious garden) where exuberant chef Jack Scarterfield has just taken up a Head Chef role at the hob (hoorah!) and has already introduced a fabulous new lunch menu in advance of a dinnertime update (which we’re reviewing next week.) The lunch menu includes tantalising dishes such as panko cod cheeks served with tartare sauce and leaves, chilli-lime chicken breast on sourdough and – a Pig Guide favourite, no less! – proper fish finger sandwiches, alongside sociable sharing platters and fave-rave classics (much as we love Jack, if he dares to meddle with the glorious MT Burger he’ll have us to answer to!) While we’re still celebrating Tavern time, don’t forget that the super-popular Steak and Malbec Night flourishes on the first Tuesday of each month, and brings a juicy rump steak, fries and salad to the table for just £12.50 – hike along the steak trail and you can grab a bottle of Malbec to accompany your carnivorous feast for just £10. But we’re diverting across town to The Chequers now…
If you, like us, worship Chequers Head Chef Alex Betts, then you’ll already know all about his legendary Tasting Menus. If, however, you haven’t got a clue what we’re talking about, you have to get with the programme: 7 amazing courses for £55 available Monday-Friday evenings, supplemented by a wonderful wine flight for just £25 (direct booking essential.) But on from this, news has just hit Pig Guide HQ about the Chequers Chef’s Table get-together, hosted and served by Alex and his team on a monthly basis. The first Chef’s Table event takes place on Wednesday 23 May, presented in association with Langley Chase Organic Farm. Not only will you meet’n’mingle with fellow foodies as you feast – you’ll also have the opportunity to meet LCOF queen Jane Kellaway, who’ll share the full lowdown on the produce-to-plate story. Space is limited and tickets (which must be booked in advance) cost £49pp, supplemented by an optional wine flight for £26pp.
Last stop on our whistlestop BPC tour: the Hare and Hounds, who sadly recently waved goodbye to their lovely Head Chef Pravin… opening the doors to a fabulous opportunity open to the right person for the job. The successful candidate will play a key role in a substantial programme of development of the H&H kitchen and food operation (news that, in itself, gets us all excited.) It’s a role for a chef with lots of experience of running busy kitchens and leading teams, and the salary reflects the seniority of the role and experience required of the individual.
